Migrating a Plesk Server

by admin on Jun.27, 2009, under Web Hosting

Trust me, its the most difficult job in the world. You can transfer cargo, just put them in containers and load them on ships and unload them where ever you want, but backing up with plesk from the old server and moving it to the new server and restoring it there is the most difficult thing that I have ever done.

Personally I have shifted homes, I have shifted offices, shifted my own websites between servers before I started a hosting company, and now I find that all very easy. No matter how many men you have to do the work, you cant work any faster than the server would. Plesk is dead slow, and with all those sites working on the server, and with clients from all over the world, there is no off peek time for your server, you will never make it.

Plesk has a backup restore function, which you need to use from the remote desktop. Create the backup selecting resellers or domains in each task, and once its complete, move the backup file to the new server, and restore it there thru the plesk bakcup resotre function.

Sounds easy? It will, till you see it. I had 12 people working on it for 24 hours a day for nearly 20 days last year to get 1 server migrated. And in the last leg of the migration, the hard disk failed on the old server, and unfortunately, the backup files that we had created were yet to be moved to the new server, and all data was lost.

Just google with indyahozting and you will find out the bad reviews that we had got because of that. But still, we were quick enough to get the new server ready and ask people to upload the backups that they have had. Luckily most of the clients had their backups handy, and they restored all files, except for the few ones, who just decided to write about us on the forums.

What not to Host Part II

by admin on Jun.19, 2009, under Web Hosting

Dont Host Porn

Porn means a lot of money. And though it is not legal in India, you can host them on American servers and manage them from any other country, and no one is going to ask you any questions. And it is the biggest money making industry in the world, and once, not so long ago, people who were not so used to the internet as of now used to say that Internet is for Porn.

Whats so bad about adult material? Well, ethically it is wrong. But why does that have to affect business? Let me tell you.

When ever you have a problem on your servers on which you are hosting porn, you can certainly go to your Datacentre, or who ever is providing support for you, since they must be supporting Porn Hosting. But, if someone attacks your server, something as minor as a DOS attack or a large scale hack attempt, you cant go to the authorities. Because you might have the fear that the authorities might harass you, and make you feel ashamed of what you are doing.

If you are a fuckin pimp and would love to make money by displaying pussy pics on the internet, go ahead and do it, but if you plan to offer normal hosting to legitimate people combined with adult hosting, dont do that, because adult servers are primary targets of hackers and abusers, since complaints arising out of these servers are minimal, and the attacks could be quite lethal, and might affect your regular cliets as well.

How to connect to your servers with Ubuntu

by admin on Feb.22, 2008, under Servers, Web Hosting

Linux, especially ubuntu, is the best operating system that you could install in your computers at your office if you are running a hosting company. No point in getting Windows, paying for the license, getting bugged, and get it resulted in a weak server maintenance or admin work done.

For Windows servers, naturally, you use the remote desktop. Use the terminal services client, enter your servers IP, and a window opens asking for the username and password, enter that and you are logged into the remote desktop of your windows server. Do you find it not as good as the remote desktop client on your windows PC?

Here we go. Terminal services Clinet is a lot stable than windows remote desktop client. It never gets hanged, or refuses to come out of the remote desktop, leaving you in the middle, and forcing you to log out of the administrator and cancelling all your running applications on the server. You can always close the window to exit and log back in to the same session. Yes, windows remote desktop client is designed to do the same too, but it doesnt work very well. I have seen that myself.

And to connect to your linux servers, though there is putty for linux as well, you dont really need it except if you want to run any command or execute anything. For basic file operations, you could directly connect to the file system with ubuntu and do any file operations as required. With putty, you cannot transfer files from local machine or vice versa. Or maybe I have not come across the command for that.

You can stay connected to linux servers with your linux computers for days and months together if your internet connection or power supply for your local machine doesnt give you away, and you will find that it is completely stable, and not like windows which, as the world knows, will not run for more than 24 hours at a streatch.
