The year when the James Bond Movie named Golden Eye rolled out, in 1997 if Im right, LG rolled out its new technology in its TVs called Golden Eye. The so called space age technology that adjusts brightness and contrast depending on the ambient light is nothing but a Light Dependent resistor that sits next to the IR Port for the remote control always looking for light.
When the light is less in the room, the LDR provides the appropriate resistance value to the current that flows thru it, and thus the other circuitary in the TV will keep the brightness and contrast levels low. When the amount of light is high, the resistance of the LDR or the light dependent resistor changes, and the contrast and brightness settings change automatically on the TV.
Such simple technology in the eyes of an engineer who knows what is what is being propagated as some Space Age Technology by these giants who have got money for advertising.
These days LG and Samsung are the best selling TVs in Indian markets, while they offer nothing more than what the earlier companies used to provide, except for the flashy casing and frills like the Golden Eye.
