Being with Indyahozting for a few years, I have managed host quite a lot of college websites from Tamil Nadu. I too have been in an engineering college, but unfortunately, I have no respect for private institutions since they are completely commercial, and give no standard. I was put in a very worse instution since my father didnt trust me for putting me in a hostel of any Institution anywhere in India, thought I would get into smoking and drinking. However, I proved that I dont really need to be in a hostel to be smoking and drinking, since Im quite addicted to both now
Anyways, Let me tell you wehre Self Financed Colleges in Tamil Nadu come from. Most of these colleges are opened by Minority People who make money somehow in their lives, and form a trust, collect donations, or get some foriegn funding, and get the buildings ready, distribute bribes as required to the ministry to get their approval, and do the needful to get an affiliation from a University, Anna University, bribing and pimping for the Vice Chancellor and his subordinates.
Once the approvals and affiliations are taken, they start advertising heavily and bring in students who have no hopes of joining an Enginnering College thanks to their marks that they might have got in 10th and 12th standards. For a seat, they collect hundreds and thousands as Donation, which does not come with a receipt. This money is completely Black and goes into the personal safes of the Trustees of the college, while the students will be told that the money is being used for the development of the institution, while the actual development would be done by the Foriegn Funds that they would be receiving.
The buildings are built at the lowest cost, while a very higher cost is presented to the funding organization. Most of the colleges build only 1 big building with about 20 rooms, and use them for class, labs, exam halls, office rooms, toilets and hostel for boys and girls. Im unable to mention the names of such colleges here, but I know about quite a handful that exist in Southern Tamil Nadu.
The Faculty are usually freshers. They would have absolutely no experience in teaching, or even the slightest amount of practical experience in what they are teaching. Lets say, if a lecturer is teaching Electrical machines, he wouldnt have seen a transformer, dismantled it or watch itwork. A software lecturer wouldnt have been a part of building a software anything bigger than one thats needed to generate the febnocci series, and the English teacher for the first year will not have very good grammar.
Apart from all the funding that these people receive from the funding institutions, the money that they collect as donation and fees from the students, they get funding for running costs from institutions, while accounting for bigger salary amoutns for staff, while paying only a fraction of that.
I have been hosting quite a lot of these people’s websites for the past 3 years, and I know the rate of change of staff in these institutions. Staff change every 3 months, and my men would be communicating with an email for some time, when all of a sudden he replies that he is no longer with that particular college and that we should stop spamming him.
Though we have approached the heads of these institutions and ask them for an email id that we can use for as long as our contracts with them last, they say that it keeps on changing, and that we should provide updates thru phone only and not thru emails. Engineering Colleges, they say. When we try to contact them thru phone for solving issues, or for billing reminders, they never respond, and if we suspend the site, they call back and just complain about the site not working, and never seem to understand that we have not been paid for keeping the site alive.
I am really sorry for the students who go to engineering colleges and waste a lot of money and come out with poor results. If you cant get a seat in a good college, dont go for these cheap institutions. Let education come back to be a service, and not a business.
