Things that slow down your computer.

Was your computer fast the day you bought it? Was it faster when you installed your Operating system in it? Were the software installing at great speeds in the early days? Did you install an anti virus? And do you feel that your computer is slow after you restarted after installing the anti virus? Well, you guessed right.

An anti virus in a Windows PC is one of the major things that slow down your PC. But you cant do without one can you? Windows PCs are bound to get infected by viruses. But very few know that Linux PCs dont get infected by virus. Linux is immune to virus, but people still go after Windows.

Apart from virus scanners, other things that could slow down your PC could be high memory consuming applications, a corrupted or an overloaded registry, or a completely fragmented hard drive could slow down your system. Again if you are using linux, you could overcome most of these problems.

Well, for those of you who would really like to stick to windows and continue getting bugged and make Bill Gates richer, let me give you a few tips.

1. You could do without a virus scanner. I for one have been a guy who has been boasting around that I have run a Windows XP machine, that too a Pirated copy of XP which means absolutely no security updates or support from microsoft, for over 4 years, without having to format the drive a single time, without a single anti virus scanner. How? Dont stick in anything that you get. Insert only trusted DVDs or CDs. Visit only trusted sites. Dont download emails with attachments into your computers. Always use good services like gmail. Dont download any EXE file if you dont know what you are downloading. Follow these very simple rules, and you will never get a virus on your pc, and you can carry on without a virus scanner.

2. When you download software from sites like cnet or zdnet, you are likely to download adware, and all adware are spyware. The spyware gathers data from your pc, or check out what all kinds of sites you visit and what sort of emails you get, just to display relevent ads, as they justify it, but your privacy is being lost. Never download such software. For example, smileycentral is a spyware.

3. Decide what software you require right when you buy the PC. Dont install them with long gaps between each new software installation. This could have an effect on the registry, as well as the hard disk. And if a software is not working properly, dont just keep on uninstalling and reinstalling it. This is very harmful to the registry. Basically, a computer can work very well without a registry. Linux is working excellently. But excited by the possiblities of putting in numerous bugs in his OS and selling it for a price, Bill and his bullshit team has been doing it for about 10 years now.

4. Have seperate partitions in your hard drive. You dont have to do this at all on your linux file system ofcourse. But on windows, I feel it is mandatory. Use the first partition, the C:\ drive for your OS and your software. Never leave your files that would be constatnly modified, like any project file of any sort or any kind, and those tiny image files that are about 1 and 2 kb in size. They clutter your hard disk badly. If you have a large drive, split it into several partitions, where you categorize your files like ever expanding files, ever changing files, images, and videos. Images and videos dont change in size. MP3 doesnt either. But your project files always change in size and shape, and it could have an effect on the fragmentation of the hard disk, and if you have that on a seperate partition, it is easy to defragment without affecting the other files or much of CPU energy. And even if you let it remain fragmented, it will in no way affect the speed of the loading of the OS or the software.

5. Dont use software such as registry cleaner. It is easier to make sure that your registry is neat and that it doesnt have to be cleaned at all.

6. If you think you have installed too many softwares, and if the PF file usage is high, check the task manager and find out which application has been using too much of resources. And if you think that the particular application is using resources that are normal as per its manuals, get more ram.

7. If you use the messenger a lot, if you have a lot of contacts, you will be spammed. Bots will not let you live in peace. Tehy will send all kinds of links. Never click on one single link on a chat unless you know who the person is you are talking to. Likewise, never store mails in your hard disk with software like thunderbird if you dont have a virus scanner. And never click on any link on any mail unless you know who the mail is from, and the message seems to be personal and is not autogenerated, and the original owner of the id is not a victim of phishing or spoofing.

8. If you think all this is hard work, and if you dont have any windows specific software running on your machines, check out my list of open source equivalents for proprietary software, and move to linux. Use ubuntu, which is currently the best, and is a ture definition of open source.

A limitation in Power

There is always a limitation of availablity of power in all homes and buildings. You cannot draw more than a preset amount of power from the supply lines. If you do, a fuse will blow, and you will need to get the engineers to come to your place to fix the fuse. So if you are throwing an extravagant party, where you will be putting up a lot of lights and music and stuff, the power that comes in the mains might not be sufficient. And for the extra power, it is not easy to get any sanction from the power department, and for a one night’s stand, generators should be all that is needed to help you out.

How to connect to your servers with Ubuntu

Linux, especially ubuntu, is the best operating system that you could install in your computers at your office if you are running a hosting company. No point in getting Windows, paying for the license, getting bugged, and get it resulted in a weak server maintenance or admin work done.

For Windows servers, naturally, you use the remote desktop. Use the terminal services client, enter your servers IP, and a window opens asking for the username and password, enter that and you are logged into the remote desktop of your windows server. Do you find it not as good as the remote desktop client on your windows PC?

Here we go. Terminal services Clinet is a lot stable than windows remote desktop client. It never gets hanged, or refuses to come out of the remote desktop, leaving you in the middle, and forcing you to log out of the administrator and cancelling all your running applications on the server. You can always close the window to exit and log back in to the same session. Yes, windows remote desktop client is designed to do the same too, but it doesnt work very well. I have seen that myself.

And to connect to your linux servers, though there is putty for linux as well, you dont really need it except if you want to run any command or execute anything. For basic file operations, you could directly connect to the file system with ubuntu and do any file operations as required. With putty, you cannot transfer files from local machine or vice versa. Or maybe I have not come across the command for that.

You can stay connected to linux servers with your linux computers for days and months together if your internet connection or power supply for your local machine doesnt give you away, and you will find that it is completely stable, and not like windows which, as the world knows, will not run for more than 24 hours at a streatch.
