Blogger to WordPress

The one thing that google could not beat was bloggers. Though it has created the page rank strategy, which is something that assigns a rank to the quality of the blog, its popular website blogger.com is not very popular these days. Only loosers who dont know how to create a blog and stuff usually go to blogger.com, and wiser people like me stick to wordpress scripts hosted by oneself. I dotn go to wordpress.com, but I download the scripts from wordpress.org, and have it hosted on my own server pointed by own domain.

Well, Mymo.in is a multiuser blog just like wordpress.com where people can actually come over and signup for their own blogs. What did you think I am doing in Pondicherry? Just sitting around and taking massage therapy all the while? I am contributing a good amount to blogging myself, and helping people to get their own blogs in different domains than the boring so called popular ones.

Never Give SSH or Remote Desktop access to Resellers

Have you got a server or a vps? Are you running a reseller hosting business? Or just sharing servers with your firends while you are administering the server? Well, I have got 1 good piece of advise for you. Never give SSH access in linux, or Remote Desktop access for windows for your reseller account holders.

Why?

Though their access might be restricted, you are literally giving them previlleges to download and install scripts on the server. They cant do that can they? You manage the server for them, and if they do something irresponsible, it would become your headache to get it fixed, and if they do something that affects your other clients? They will hold you responsible.

When in remote desktop, they can access the browser, and if they use it for some illegal activity, like using fake credit cards or stolen card numbers from your server on some site for some server or buy things, your server’s ips get recorded, and if there is a dispute, not only your server will be suspended, you will become responsible for the transactions that happen.

And if the client installs a mass mailing software on the remote desktop and uses it, your ip gets blacklisted.

There are several other things that could happen. Never give out Remote Desktop or SSH access to any client or reseller. You can always fix this limitation on your control panel when you create the account.

Remote Access Key in cPanel

Cpanel, in my opinion, is the best hosting control panel that there has ever been. Among its various features, there is something called Remote Access Key. With this, you can do most operations on cpanel externally.

When you run your company that is fully automated and use scripts like modernbill or AWBS, all that you need to do is to give the script your remote access key, and when ever someone comes online to palce the order and the invoice is closed, the software creates the account automatically all by itself and you dont have to worry about a thing.

This key can also be used to create new email ids, new ftp accounts etc in cpanel. On the whole, you can do anything that you do on cpanel or whm with the remote access key from outside.

Where do you get the remote access key?

In your admin or reseller whm panel, you will find a button called Clustering/Remote Access. This button can be used to configure your new remote access key.

Loaded with Mails? Use Google Apps

This is a common problem. In cPanel/WHM, you can limit the number of mails that can be sent from a domain in an hour. In windows or plesk, you cant do that. Windows 2003 is not a server operating system you know, it is just more of a secured (or so called) PC. You cant expect any features in it.

Though you can set limitations in the number of mails send per domain, spammers get hold of scripts that clients use in their websites to send mails, and spam the hell out of your server. And your server just stops working. Or, if your server is powerful enough, your mails just stop working.

Whats the best way to prevent that from happening? Use google’s google apps. The free email service for your jenifaa-sakura domain name.

When you create hosting, make your settings in such a way that the mx record that is created for each domain is set to google’s. When your client gets the hosting, ask him to sign up at google.com/a and get his mail box. There he will have no limitations of mails or mail ids or anything. And there is no way that your IP gets blacklisted.

And google has a great system that they dont let people abuse their systems easily. It is a neat system.
