The Land of Bad Servers

Pondicherry is not a big city. It is more of a tourist spot, and a place wehre politicians fight for their superiority within their 1 KM zones in which they would be elected. I have never cared to learn what it is called in English, but in Tamil, they call it Toguthi. Well, so, the only standard ISP in Pondicherry just like in most parts of India is BSNL, and both at my home and at my office I am stuck with BSNL broadband, since the only other good one available is Airtel and it has a very very limited coverage here in Pondicherry.

Untill a few months ago, the connection at my home used to give problems every once in a while, and I used to get heavy bills for the usage though I doubt that I have used it much in those days, but right now, with the unlimited connections both at home and office, there is hardly any downtime.

Untill recently. At the office, for the past few days in the afternoon hours a strange phenomenon is occuring when the internet goes off every 150 seconds and comes back after every 150 seconds. This simply acts an an on off cycle with a frequency of 150 seconds. I got fed up with this today and went directl to the exchange, and they asked me to bring the modem stating that it si a modem problem. Bloody hell, a modem will not act like this, it is the problem of the bloody port to which our line is connected.

They are just refusing to check it, and when I came back to the office I found that net is working without the breaks, but with latency of upto 5 seconds per ping. I wonder how that works, there is a delay of 5 seconds or over 5000 ms for every request that is sent every second. Maybe the people programmed ubuntu know what they have been doing, and its correct.

Well, what is the best way to get connected to the internet? People these days do say that there will be satellite downlinks all over India in the next 2 years, and India would be the next server farm, and that you will find one in every home. If BSNL doesnt improve its service, people will start hosting their servers on BSNL, and that would come down as another black mark for India. The Land of Bad Servers.

Server Grids

The trend of hosting multiple sites on one server has gone, and right now it is in fashion to host one site on several servers. Well, sites that have traffic or a lot of content ofcourse. Take for example an image gallery that has got a lot of images, which is updated automatically from several websites onthe web. Did you knwo that hosting images or content on your site giving proper credits to the copyright owners of the images or by linking to them is never illegal?

So, if you get an idea to start a site like that, you can never do with just 1 server. You will become someone like flikr, attract images from everywhere, and put them on automated image galleries, and this way traffic will automatically come over to your website, and with that traffic you could make a lot of money selling ads and stuff.

This is why today you might see people ordering 10s and 100s of servers all at one go with the datacenters at good discounted rates, and network them internally to make them into a grid, or make them into one single server with loads of processor resources memory and disk drive space. Some people say that if you make a grid out of 2 P4 processor computers, you will get the power of 2^n = 2^2 = 4 computers. That way if you make a grid out of 128 computers, then the power that you would be able to derive would be of 340282366920938463463374607431768211456 computers. Maybe thats how Wikipedia is so powerful and fast though it is the 2nd website after google that receives the most number of visitors. But is this calculation correct? Thats a very large number, and if someone wants computing power why dont they just rely on this and why do people go for mainframes and stuff?

Ad Express

Thats a local advertising paper in Pondicherry. They take money from advertisers, publish the paper and distribute it for free.

I wanted to sell my bike since Im getting a new one (I change my bike once a year you know), and along with that ad, I tried to place an ad with which I oculd attract bloggers in Pondicherry and make a community. But for some reason, tey didnt really like the concept and refused to accept the ad. They thought it was some malicious advertisment that I was trying to place.

This is the result of ignorance. Those people, proficient and enterprising, arent able to understand what blogging means or why anyone would be writing atricles for no compensation at all.

Ofcourse there are ways to attract bloggers online, but I just wanted to reach the people who can really write and bring them into blogging and make the world a better place, but I think I made a mistake in choosing Ad Express. I should have gone for a bigger Paper where they understand stuff.

Thats what made me feel dementored yesterday I guess. I didnt mind their refusal ofcourse, but I felt a bit bad.

Insure your car

It is damn important to get your car insured. It is a moving vehicle, and if you hit someone, or if you get hit by someone, or if someone gets into your way, there is considerable amount of damage to your car, and if the other person is damaged because of you or your vehicle, you will have to pay damages out of your pocket. If your vehicle is insured, the insurance company will take care of that.

In many jurisdictions it is compulsory to have vehicle insurance before using or keeping it on public roads. Most jurisdictions relate insurance to both the car and the driver, however the degree of each varies greatly.

A 1994 study by Jeremy Jackson and Roger Blackman showed, consistent with the risk homeostasis theory, that increased accident costs caused large and significant reductions in accident frequencies.

In the United States, though enforcement of the requirement varies from state to state. The state of New Hampshire, for example, does not require motorists to carry liability insurance, while in Virginia residents must pay the state a $500 annual fee per vehicle if they choose not to buy liability insurance. Penalties for not purchasing auto insurance vary by state, but often involve a substantial fine, license and/or registration suspension or revocation, as well as possible jail time in some states. Usually, the minimum required by law is third party insurance to protect third parties against the financial consequences of loss, damage or injury caused by a vehicle.

And just like in any other industry, there are lot of choices that are available for you. Where to choose from? Who offers insurance for the lowest premium, who offers the highest no claim bonus and stuff. Again, go to the internet, for auto insurance quotes where you get to see all options that are available.
